Abstract: |
To investigate the structural characteristics and stability of the forest communities in South China, we analyzed a natural secondary broad-leaved mixed forest (70 m×100 m) in Guangdong Shimen National
Forest Park. We calculated the population structure, stand structure, niche width, niche overlap, and overall
correlation, and analyzed the structural characteristics and stability of the forest community. The results showed
that the trees within the sample site were classified into 30 families, 44 genera, and 68 species. The overall diameter-class distribution exhibited a reverse J-shaped distribution curve. The uniform angle index distribution
approximated a nearly normal distribution, with a high proportion of trees exhibiting random spatial arrangement, which indicates a stable stand. The ranking of importance values of the dominant tree species within the
sample site was inconsistent with the ordering of niche positions, and the niche overlap index of species pairs in
tree communities was less than 0. 5, and indicating a low level of competition. The sample plots exhibit an overall non-significant positive association, suggesting limited interactions between populations. Therefore, in
the follow-up management process of natural secondary forests in South China, appropriate artificial intervention and reasonable collocation of species can be carried out to promote the positive succession of forest communities. |
