Abstract:
The study of water conservation function and value in forest ecosystems has long been a promi nent topic in the - field of forest ecosystem service function, as forests play a crucial role in preserving water resources in terrestrial ecosystems. This paper aims to investigate the progress, research focus areas, and latest trends in the water conservation function of forest ecosystems. The study utilizes the China Knowledge Network (CNKI) and Web of Science Core Collection database, along with visualization tools such as CiteSpace and VOSviewer. These tools are employed to analyze the knowledge structure of research in this field, as well as the publication dynamics, international and institutional collaborations, prominent topics, and emerging developments. The findings indicate a global upward trend in the publication of articles on water conservation in forest ecosystems, with China′s research in this area gaining increasing international recognition. China leads in terms of the number of published articles, but the United States demonstrates stronger collaboration with other nations. Among the organizations publishing in this field, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has the highest number of publications in both the CNKI and WOS databases. The study′s focal points on water conservation in forest ecosystems, both in Chinese and English, are the forest′s water retention capacity, the ecological services it provides, and how these are affected by climate change and land use change. Chinese literature in the field of water conservation in forest ecosystems primarily examines the hydrological effects of the litter layer and soil layer. In contrast, English literature focuses on the impacts of drought conditions, spatial variability, and changes in landscape patterns on the water conservation function. In the future, China should prioritize research on the changes in water conservation functions and their assessment at various spatial and temporal scales under different scenarios such as climate change, forest structural change, and land use change. This research will enable China to provide more effective services for integrated water resources management and decision-making for risk prevention.
