Abstract:
The invasive alien species Chilades pandava is a major insect pest of Cycas spp. plants. Repellents from non-host plants provide a basis for the green control of C. pandava. In this study, the essential oil of Psidium guajava leaves (PGEOs) was extracted with the steam distillation method, and its chemical composition was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The repellent effect and the electroantennographic activity of PGEOs as well as its main components on the females of C. pandava were determined with the Y-olfactometer and the gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) respectively. The results from the GC-MS analysis showed that PGEOs mainly contained sesquiterpenes and oxygenated sesquiterpenes, including (E)-β-caryophyllene (32.47%), α-copaene (10.44%), calamenene (8.19%), globulol(7.19%) and aromandendrene(5.01%). GC-EAD recordings confifirmed the electrophysiological activity of eight volatile compounds in PGEOs, of which(E)-β-caryophyllene was the most active compound and had a dose-dependent effect. PGEOs and (E)-β-caryophyllene can both signifificantly repel C. pandava females with dose-dependent, and the repellent rates were 73.08% and 68.00%, respectively, at the concentration of 0.5 μL/mL.
